Dear Tom,
I found it is interesting that doctor-writers often give some funny thoughts in their stories, even in serious story. Does these have anything to do with the idea you said?
Best wishes, Julie

Here are Tom's responses :

Jolene
Jolene, you are absolutely right in that love is largely what you need
it to be or at least what you think you need it to be. Love matures as
you get older and how you perceive love changes over time. If you are
ever in a relationship where you are questioning whether it is love
remember the words of a great man who once said, "love to a surf board
is a foot with short toenails".

Lauria
Lauria, you need never be embarrassed about how you perceive anything a
writer has written. The biggest part of writing is to communicate with
your reader and to the extent that good communication doesn't happen you
need to look at your writing to see if you needed to have done something
differently. We all think in different ways and perceive the world
differently so reader's comments are just as important as what the writer
has written. When I wrote Nerd I did not write it with esl students in
mind and certainly not with a culture other than that in the U.S. in mind. I
think that all of this may have taught me as much as Dr. Chung has taught
you guys in class.

Liddi
Liddi, you're correct in that my responses are far longer than my story. I
have enjoyed both reading the class's responses as well as responding to
comments.

Joelle
Joelle, the internet is a wonderful tool. I would have really enjoyed the
chance to actually talk with a writer when I was taking my college english
courses. It wouldn't have mattered to me if it was some great writer like
Shirley Jackson or if it was someone who just wrote a story for the class. I
think it would have made things much more real for me so I'm really glad to
get to be a part of that process even if its not as an official student. Even
when you're teaching the best part of it is learning things from students so
this has also been a great experience for me.

Hui-Chun Hsu
Responding to messages from the class has not been quite a piece of cake
for me. I appreciate the responses and feel that if you were taking the
time to respond to me the very least that I could do was to respond to
you individually rather than write one long general response.

Rico
Rico, I hope that you keep your interest in radio and I look forward to your
being my first contact from that part of the world. 73

Ben Tai
I only take credit for suggestions when they produce good results .

Claire
Claire, if you can get a better date by having some guy read my story, go for
it. Just don't blame me if the guy laughs at you.

Victor
Thank you for my name in Chinese, Victor. I have a friend who does calligraphy
who is going to make a sign for my mail box which will have my Chinese name on
it.

Judy Huang
You're very welcome, Judy.

Annien Chang
I hadn't really thought about my responses being interesting in and of
themselves. Perhaps one day I can make them in to some kind of a story.

Nancy
Nancy, if anyone who has read any of my material begins to see blind people as
just people who happen to be blind rather than blind people I have done as much
as I could hope to do and entertaining anyone with my writing is a big plus
that's just icing on the cake for me.

Annie Chan
Annie, you or anyone else in the class is welcome to write to me at any time.
It does not require you to be in the class to do so. As you can tell by the
lack of speed in posting my responses I am sometimes a little slow about
responding but do almost always do so.

James
I was never a serious dj but worked in small radio stations in west Texas and
New Mexico as well as one in Arkansas. Back then, everything was on
records and recordings such as commercials were on large tape cartridges.
Switches and controls were all manual and there were no computers controlling
things. It is very different today with all of the digital technology, cds
rather than records, computers both for processing things and playing sound
files, etc.

Jackie Chan
Jackie, I would appreciate any feedback you have on other stories I've
written.

Megan
Megan, think about eyes this way; using your eyes is largely a state of mind.

Vivid
Somehow I've never watched Scent Of A Woman. I've only seen parts of it. I
need to go rent it this weekend.

Julie
I usually try and make what I wrote at least a little amusing or strange in
some way. I suppose its from writing journal papers and things like that
which are so dry to read.

Leila
I was also quite surprised to find that all of you had responded to my story.

Jenny
Jenny, any time you feel the need to practice your english I'd be glad for you
to write me. E-mail is something that you guys have grown up with but its
still an amazing thing to me.
